Meeting takes place on Feb. 13 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Magnarelli Community Center

Syracuse, N.Y. – The City of Syracuse will hold a public information meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13 for a major “dig once” infrastructure project scheduled to begin later this year on Butternut Street from Grant Boulevard (including Butternut Circle) to Hillside Street on the north side of Syracuse. The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Magnarelli Community Center at McChesney Park at 2308 Grant Boulevard.

The  multi-million dollar dig once project will include “full depth” reconstruction of the road along Butternut Street between Butternut Circle to Hillside Street; including new asphalt pavement, new sidewalks, replacement of watermains, replacement of lead water services and rehabilitation of sewer infrastructure. It will also include a new traffic management plan for the intersection of Butternut Street and Grant Boulevard; including beautification of the center strip green space at the crossroads. Construction is expected to begin this summer.

“Completing road reconstruction and underground infrastructure work at the same time is an important investment in the north side. We want to be sure the public is aware of the project plans and has an opportunity to offer input,” said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli worked hard to make the funding available for this and other big infrastructure projects in the City, and I thank him for his consistent support.”

The project team from the City Engineering Department and Syracuse engineering firm, Barton & Loguidice, D.P.C., will provide an update on the current schedule, as well information on construction impacts during the project. The City will also seek input from residents regarding traffic management options for the intersection of Butternut Street and Grant Boulevard.

“This project has been a high priority for residents, and I’m glad it is moving ahead,” said First District Common Councilor Joe Carni, who represents the area. “Dig once is the most effective way to get this work done, so I appreciate Assemblyman Magnarelli helping to make resources available on the north side.”

During the summer of 2020, the City Department of Public Works will also complete a full reconstruction of Grant Boulevard between Wheaton Road and the Butternut Circle. Curbs in much of that area were replaced in 2019.
