W. Colvin Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project Starts Next Week

Improvements to the bridge over Onondaga Creek will detour traffic until early September

The City of Syracuse Department of Engineering is scheduled to begin work the week of May 10 on the W. Colvin Street Bridge over the Onondaga Creek, between Kirk Park Drive and Hunt Avenue. The planned improvements will address deteriorated conditions, increase pedestrian and vehicle safety and extend the life-cycle of the bridge.

The bridge will be closed to traffic for the duration of the project until early September but will remain open to foot traffic. Detour signs will be in place throughout the duration of the project to reroute traffic to Hatch Street and Elmhurst Avenue, adding only one additional minute to travel time.

In May 2020, a public comment period for residents on the Southside was opened to collect input from neighbors related to the planned repairs for the bridge. Participants provided feedback on the scope of work which will include repairs to the bridge deck, also replacing the railing and making the sidewalks Americans with Disability Act-compliant. In addition to the repair work, new bridge curbs, joints and bearings will be installed.

The project is primarily funded by the Department of Transportation through the Federal Transit Administration Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), with oversight managed by the New York State Department of Transportation.
