Office of Attorney General program on July 24 offers payment and an iPad for turning in guns

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh and Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner announced a Community Gun Buyback program will take place in the City of Syracuse on Saturday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Lucy’s Food Pantry at 425 Gifford Street. People who return hand guns and assault rifles under the amnesty program will be eligible to receive a financial payment and an iPad, on a first come-first served basis.

No identification is needed to turn in a firearm, and no questions are asked of persons dropping off firearms. Weapons returned must be unloaded and placed in a box or plastic or paper bag.  Individuals can surrender as many firearms as they wish to provide. Licensed gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible for the program.

“Reducing gun violence requires a comprehensive response. We need to take every action available to get guns off our streets,” said Mayor Walsh. “I thank Attorney General James for bringing this successful gun buyback program to Syracuse. I urge members of our community take advantage of this opportunity.”

“This is a no questions asked occasion for people to get dangerous firearms in to safe hands. I ask community members to help us spread the word about this gun buyback program. If you know of an illegal firearm or any firearm that needs to be disposed of, now is the time,” said Chief Buckner.

The Office of the Attorney General program accepts the following types of firearms:

Assault Rifle$250– Payment made by pre-paid gift card at the site

– Receive iPad along with the gift card for working handguns and assault rifles

– One iPad per person, subject to availability on a first come first served basis
  Handgun  $150
  Rifle or Shotgun  $75
  Non-working or Antique Gun  $25
