Below is a joint statement issued by New York State Senator Rachel May (53rd District, Chair of Committee on Aging), New York State Senator John W. Mannion (50th District, Chair of the Committee on Disabilities) and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. The Senators and Mayor toured the Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in the Town of Onondaga this morning.

“Today, we took our grave concerns regarding patient safety and troubling conditions at the Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing directly to the management team.

While we are sympathetic to the ongoing challenges confronting this facility and the entire industry, we cannot allow our beloved seniors to suffer neglect or receive substandard care.

Mayor Walsh met with Van Duyn management during his touw of the facility on Oct. 14.

We are appreciative of the Department of Health’s efforts to intervene and are awaiting the results of an inspection conducted earlier this month.

Our goal is to work with management and state regulators to resolve all issues and restore the public trust in the Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.”
