First major address of Walsh’s second term will come from the tech manufacturing facility that is part of the Syracuse Surge
Mayor Walsh will deliver the 2022 State of the City on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m. Mayor Walsh’s fifth State of the City address to the Common Council will be presented from the soon-to-open JMA Wireless technology manufacturing plant located on the Syracuse’s Southside. The new JMA Wireless facility is in the heart of the Southside Campus for the New Economy, a central element of Walsh’s Syracuse Surge strategy for inclusive growth in the New Economy.

“Despite the global challenges of COVID-19 during the past nearly two years, the City of Syracuse continues its resurgence. There is no better symbol than the construction of the new JMA Wireless campus, which is rising at a formerly vacant industrial site,” said Mayor Walsh. “The project – the first major manufacturing plant in the city in decades – is representative of Syracuse’s persistence and our determination to ensure that prosperity creates opportunity for all.”
JMA Wireless, based in Syracuse, makes the world’s most advanced software-based 5G platform, which it designs, codes, and manufactures in the United States. The company plans to hire at least 200 people at its new plant on South Salina Street and Tallman Street. JMA Wireless is conducting job fairs and working with community partners to reach city residents to help fill open positions in manufacturing, business, and technology.
“Working together with the Council, we have begun to solve intractable challenges in public safety, housing, mobility, the economy and in city services and fiscal sustainability,” Walsh said. “The opportunity and requirement for more progress has never been greater. I am energized and excited about what it is ahead and look forward to outlining our plans for 2022.”
The Mayor’s State of the City address, an annual report from the Mayor of the City to the Common Council, is required by the City’s charter. For COVID-19 safety, the address will be open to a limited in-person audience by invitation. It will be broadcast on WCNY Public Broadcasting Channel 24.
