No change in setout dates for city residents as DPW works works to reduce pick up delays
The City of Syracuse Department of Public Works (DPW) is implementing a second shift for sanitation pick up crews on daily routes to reduce trash and recycling delays being experienced by residents. The pilot program will continue until further notice while the department confronts a mechanic shortage and awaits delivery of new sanitation trucks delayed by nationwide supply chain issues. The change does not impact setout dates for residents.
“By splitting crews into two shifts on daily routes, our goal is to get trash and recycling picked up on schedule. As we continue to wait for the arrival of new sanitation trucks, we will use our existing equipment in a way that extends the pickup day without overburdening our crews,” said Jeremy Robinson, commissioner of the Department of Public Works. “I’m grateful to the hard working members of our Sani team for their tireless efforts help keep our community clean and safe. We are continually trying to improve the City’s fleet operations during this time so we can better serve our constituents.”
Under the two shift schedule, crews will be collecting trash and recycling between 6a.m. and as late as 6 p.m., up to 4 hours longer than the previous schedule. The separate shifts for sanitation crews come in response to the ongoing delays in recycling pick ups caused by a staffing challenges, a shortage of mechanics to repair down equipment, and by supply chain problems delaying the impact of six new trucks that were due before the end of year.
Residents should continue to put their trash and recycling bins out for pick up according to regular schedule.
