MORE THAN A VISIT: STORYTELLING AND JOURNALISM W/ MORE THAN A VISIT: STORYTELLING AND JOURNALISM W/ NATASHA ALFORD @natashasalford is a daughter of Syracuse. She is Afro-Latina and grew up on the Southside enjoying poetry, oratory, and storytelling. She went onto earn her bachelors and master degrees from @harvard and @northwesternu after graduating from Nottingham High School. After college, Natasha worked as an educator and in financial investments before choosing to return to using journalism as a tool to change lives and ultimately spotlight the power of people and communities. Over the past few years, Natasha has become the "people's journalist" in her work as a @CNN analyst and as Vice President of Digital Content for @thegrio but she hasn't stopped there. She has contributed to the @nytimes, @oprahmagazine, @guardian and continues to mentor the next generation of journalists. Her visit back home this week includes: — a workshop on pitching to national media in partnership with @mysouthside Stand — a visit to @syracuseschools to speak with youth — a community town hall at Greater Evangelical Church on Empowering the Community through Journalism (Wed. Oct 20, 6pm) — a workshop with Camelot Todd and the Syracuse Journalism Lab — and a visit to @newhousesu for a day-long workshop on entrepreneurship and branding for aspiring journalism students in high school Mayor Walsh asked the City Communications Director, @ruthnieangrand, to deliver a proclamation proclaiming the week Natasha S. Alford Empowerment through Journalism week to acknowledge how this city native is committed to growth, diversity, and opportunity #forall. NEIGHBORHOOD DREAM COMING TRUE Pathfinder Bank inv NEIGHBORHOOD DREAM COMING TRUE Pathfinder Bank invited neighbors and community leaders to its new branch under construction in a formally vacant West Onondaga Street mansion. Mayor Walsh thanked Pathfinder for investing in a key neighborhood business corridor on the southwest side. As it creates a new branch, the bank is saving and restoring historic features inside and outside the building. Pathfinder expects to open in the first quarter of 2022.
HEALING A COMMUNITY. Mayor Ben Walsh joined the Ne HEALING A COMMUNITY. Mayor Ben Walsh joined the New York State Attorney General Leticia James and the regions elected leaders today to share how the region will begin healing from the harm of the opioid crisis. Attorney General Letitia James today began her statewide ‘HealNY’ tour of New York state, where she delivered the first of up to $1.5 billion dollars to the city and the county. The funds — which will go to all 10 regions of the state — come from different settlements Attorney General James has negotiated following a 2019 lawsuit against manufacturers and distributors responsible for the opioid crisis. The addiction crisis is bigger than just one city, said Mayor Walsh. It affects neighbors from every town and village across the region. This problem is bigger than one city or one demographic. “…we are ensuring every region and every county gets financial help to recover from the devastation that opioids have inflicted on them. The funds we’re infusing into New York today and going forward will be used towards combatting this epidemic with investments in prevention, treatment, and recovery,” said AG James. #healing #opioidcrisis
