A CARING NEIGHBORHOOD We took our regular Neighbor A CARING NEIGHBORHOOD We took our regular Neighborhood Power Walks to Hawley Green Tuesday. Mayor Walsh and leaders of departments across city government walked the neighborhood to identify and address quality of life issues. They also knocked on doors and talked with residents about their concerns. Thank you, Hawley Green neighbors, for caring for #Syracuse. CELEBRATING HISPANIC/LATINO HERITAGE MONTH Mayor CELEBRATING HISPANIC/LATINO HERITAGE MONTH Mayor Walsh visited La Casita Cultural Arts and Cultural center this weekend to continue celebrating Hispanic/Latino heritage month. La Casita Cultural Center is located in the historic Lincoln Building on the city’s Westside. The Center is an art gallery, a classroom, bilingual library, performance space, workshop facility, and had a kitchenette and meeting space. It is a staple in the community and celebrates Latin heritage and culture. This weekends program included student volunteers, native dishes and meals, performances by poet Noel Quiñones, and a safe gathering and appreciation for Latino culture and contribution. The exhibits and volume of Latin culture and notables is so rich at the center. Thank you La Casita for continuing to keep and share our cultural stories. Syracuse is a #PlayBall City! ⚾️ Mayor Ben Wa Syracuse is a #PlayBall City! ⚾️ Mayor Ben Walsh partnered with Visit Syracuse, U.S. Conference of Mayors, Syracuse Police Department, Syracuse Mets and Syracuse PAL To host the biggest PAL clinic to date with 138 families registered for the Mayor's #PlayBall clinic. Thank you common Councilor Michael Green who also came out to scout the future of Syracuse Baseball as well as Senator John Mannion who alongside Healthcare Education Project CNY donated backpacks and food boxes to students amd families. Thank you to the Syracuse Parks & Rec department for the great facilities at Burnet and volunteers who guided drills, scrimmages, registration and much more. Thanks to volunteers, sponsors like Adam Weitsman, and Visit Syracuse, every kid got to go home with a new glove today. "It's so nice to see all these students coming together and enjoying the game of baseball, each other, and playing with law enforcement. The weather's perfect and Im just watching and enjoying the BBQ," said one parent who stayed to watch at the park. Thank you Syracuse Fire Department Lieutenant Barnes for volunteering to grill a grab and go lunch from Who Want Smoke BBQ and Catering🔥. Most importantly, thank you to parents and student players. Commonspace Warren opened 59 more living units and 25,000 square feet of flexible office space on Warren Street. One group doing good in Syracuse is Blessings in a Backpack. The group has provided comfort and stability in the form of pre-planned nourishment for nearly 84,000 children nationally, and has increased to 87,000 since mid-March. . . Superintendent Jaime Alicea, SCSD District Chief Nurse Rachel Murphy, and organizer John Meyer joined Mayor Walsh as he proclaimed this week Blessings in a Backpack Week to honor the work this team of volunteers is doing to change lives in Syracuse. . . #HispanicHeritageMonth FACT Each year, Americans o #HispanicHeritageMonth FACT Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. (hispanicheritagemonth.gov) For example, Mexican Independence Day coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month. . . Mexican Independence Day often gets overshadowed or confused with Cinco de Mayo, but they're not the same thing. On this day, Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo in 1810 delivered a midnight speech rallying Mexicans for independence and ringing the town’s church bells. The moment, is known as the "Grito de Dolores”which began the 11-year Mexican War of Independence. And every year, in commemoration, people gather at the Mexican National Palace in Mexico City to begin celebrations, hear the bells ring, and honor those who fought for the country’s independence. . . To our Mexican neighbors in Syracuse, Happy Independence. To all of our Hispanic/LatinX residents, Happy Hispanic Heritage Month.
